Healthy Choices for Kids Online
The Healthy Choices for Kids nutrition education program was created by the growers of Washington state apples and is funded in part by the Washington Apple Education Foundation, Tree Top, Inc., and other industry sponsors. All materials are copyrighted, however any educator may freely copy and distribute all content for use in a classroom setting. This program consists of four separate volumes, each comprising a complete, ready to use curriculum guide. This site features great activities for kids.

This is a great interactive site. Students can interact with many different characters. There are songs and sounds students can interact with. It is a very user-friendly site.

The National Arts Centre (NAC) presents ArtsAlive.ca Music, a great place to discover the excitement of the performing arts! Learn all about orchestral music, the NAC Orchestra, its musicians and friends, great composers, conductors and much more! This is a great site for teachers and students.

Imagination Cubed
This is a site that is similar to a draw program. The mouse acts as a pen. Users can also stamps images, place shapes, type words, and import lines. This is a great site to draw a picture. The user can send the picture, save the picture, or e-mail the picture.

Make-a-Flake
This is a great site for winter fun. This site allows the user to cut a flake online. Users direct the scissors to the part of the folded paper they would like to cut. The user can undo the previous cut and view the snowflake at any time. The snowflake can be saved in a gallery on the site or you can also e-mail it to someone.

Great Reading and Language Arts Sites

Clean Up Your Grammar

This site is great to give students practice sorting nouns and verbs. It is an interactive sorting game that gives students immediate feedback. Here is the scenario: The beach is getting dirty with bad grammar, and we need your help to clean up the beach. Pick your level (Level 1 or 2), and put the trash in the correct garbage can. You can also play this game in Spanish.

This site provides information about print awareness, the sounds of speech, phonemic awareness, phonics, informal assessment, fluency, vocabulary, spelling, writing and text comprehension. This a great resource for teachers and parents.

Contraction Practice

This site gives students practice with contractions. The Contraction Cards can be used in different ways: As a concentration or matching game, as flashcards, or they can be used together to create a card game which children can play as partners and try to make contraction pairs for points.

Declaration of Independence
This site is dedicated to the Declaration of Independence. Students can learn what acts led up to construction of the Declaration. The site provides information on the signers, how it was safeguarded, the publishing of the document, and the actual words of the Declaration of Independence. This site provides great images of actual documents.

Colonial House

This site is an interactive recreation of life during the colonial times. Students can view journal entries, houses, tools, and clothing. This is an actual show on PBS. Students can watch videos, hear audio statements and interviews, and view photos.

Virtual Jamestown

This site is an interactive site that allows students to interact with the materials posted regarding Jamestown. Students can view maps, real documents, public records, labor contracts, court records, and photos. This would be a great website to develop a unit of colonialism around. The site even offers examples of how other students and teachers are using these resources to learn. The Virtual Jamestown Archive is a digital research, teaching and learning project that explores the legacies of the Jamestown settlement and "the Virginia experiment." As a work in progress, Virtual Jamestown aims to shape the national dialogue on the occasion of the four hundred-year anniversary observance in 2007 of the founding of the Jamestown colony.

Fun Facts About Recycling- This site talks about recycling and some facts about it. It is something that a teacher would want to walk through with students to discuss the different components.

NASA Kids- This site provides great information about space exploration and our solar system. There are animated videos you can watch about space shuttles launches, astronauts, and other topics. There are also games you can play and lists of activities that you can do that are all related to learning about space. The games are not problem based, but more of about learning basic information.

Constructivist Sites:

National Geographic Kids- This site provides an interactive activity about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Students go with Lewis and Clark on their journey, making important decisions as they go, such as navigating rivers and deciding what to bring with you on the journey. It asks questions and these decisions, and students click on the answer they choose. On thing I really like about this is that after students make their decisions, the site provides feedback about their choice. This teaches students to explore on their own, and provides them with information so they learn from their decisions.

Amazon Interactive: Ecotourism Simulation Game- Students explore the geography of the Ecuadorian Amazon through online games and activities. They learn about the rainforest and the Quichua people who call it home. Students also discover the ways in which the Quichua live off the land. They get the opportunity to try their hand at running a community-based ecotourism project along the Río Napo.

Personal DNA Test

I found the personal DNA test to be very intriuging. I liked the way that it allowed its users to answer questions on a spectrum. However, I do think that it misrepresented my in regards to having empathy. I consider myself a very empathetic person. Many of the other statements seem true or have some value.
